Since the dawn of the Space Age, the world has benefited from the transfer of NASA ingenuity into the marketplace. Spinoffs are the product of NASA technology development, partnerships, research, patent licenses, waivers and facility use.
Hubble Space Telescope > Digital Mammography
NASA teamed up with Scientific Imaging Technologies, Inc. to produce a supersensitive Charge Coupled Device (CCD) capable of capturing images of space in unprecedented detail. The Hubble-derived CCD technology is now a leader in digital breast imaging, lowering costs and reducing radiation exposure by 50 percent.
QWIP Technology > Breast Cancer Screening
Advancements in Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (QWIP) technology support planetary exploration and enhance terrestrial surveillance capabilities. The BioScanSystem uses this technology to detect changes in blood flow associated with cancerous cells. Earlier detection enables timely medical intervention and in turn could increase breast cancer survival rates.
Spacecraft Instruments > Breast Imaging System
With experience gained in spacecraft instrumentation, the Boulder Imaging Inc. team created AquireNow—a program that manages high data rate, digital images like those needed for cancer screening. The AveraBreast Imaging System incorporated AquireNow technology and currently provides radiation free screenings without the discomfort of compression.
